Dancing is the most liberated form of expression that I know. As far as I’m aware, it’s totally unnecessary from an evolutionary perspective but somehow primal and fundamentally human.
About 9 months ago I decided to try and master a dance form that I’d always liked that seemed really expressive and that had evolved organically. I’d always been aware of Northern Soul, ever since I was a teenager but never had the faintest clue how the dancing worked. Backdrops aside (because they are definitely off the agenda at my age), I’ve been to a number of workshops and soul nights and I’m starting to get the hang of it bit by bit. I can recommend it - it’s knackering though.
My poster is based on a series of great photos by Richard Tymon of Wigan Young Soul Owen Phillips-Bolton. ‘Three before Eight’ are the final three records that were played every night at Wigan Casino until it closed.
